We are facing an epidemic of pornography on the net of which the repercussions remain not fully understood. And it is frightening. With the click of a mouse, anyone, at any age, at any time can view porn online.
Governments are still tangled up by the “it’s a free-speech issue” argument. The porn industry has managed to hold onto the idea that porn is victimless entertainment which involves only the user and the consenting adults who participate. The law has yet to meet up with reality and with technology. In a world where anyone can produce and upload porn videos or images, the internet is becoming filled to the brim with hardcore pornography and disturbing content that no one should be exposed to, let alone our children!
A written report from the Witherspoon Institute in Princeton, N.J.,entitled, “The Social Costs of Pornography” points to new social science and brain research, and finds evidence that pornography causes multifaceted harms and warns that we will pay the price for this.
Porn is teaching negative behaviors and attitudes towards sexuality. And while for adults this is often a big problem, for children that are seeing it, it is just a disaster that can impact their capability to have any type of healthy sexual relationship if they grow up.
There is no amount of education or warning that can prevent children from viewing pornography online today. In the home, friends, grandparents, school, the library, make sure a porn filter is installed on the computer. Demand it. It’s not going to go away in the event that you ignore it.
